Welcome to my blog!

Here you’ll find progress on current books, behind-the-scenes insight and story inspiration, as well peeks at my life on rural, (usually) rainy East Hawaii Island.

The Blog Menu Dropdown highlights three categories, Hawaii Life (pretty self-explanatory), Stories I Love (also pretty self-explanatory, but includes books, movies, and TV), and Magpie Moments (bits I snatched from real life and incorporated, magpie-like, into my fiction).

Shades of Winterport on Vacation, or Why You Don’t Ask a Writer for Directions

Another airport, another Friday blog post. <Glance at calendar> But wait—it’s not Friday; it’s Sunday. Yeah, about that… I actually wrote the following post on an airplane Friday, intending to upload it at the next airport when we landed, but then things got complicated. One of our flights was delayed (while we sat on the tarmac with no internet), which meant we missed our connection at LAX, yada, yada, yada… The short version (I may share a longer version this coming Friday if I haven’t gotten it out of my system yet) is we spent Friday night in Honolulu, made it to Read more…

It Was the Best of Times… And the Other Part, Too

This week’s blog post will be on the brief side, but I have a feeling you’ll forgive me when I tell you I’m writing it in LAX (3 a.m. Hawaii time) on a borrowed computer. (Don’t worry—it’s my husband’s, not some random person foolish enough to nap with their head on a jacket instead of their laptop.) It’s been a crazy week. Let’s start with the Bestest Part, since that’s more accurately Dickensian. I had a BookBub ad this week, which probably doesn’t mean anything to you unless you’re one of the million or so voracious readers on their list. Read more…

Where’s my Scotty (preferably with laptop expertise)?

Oh my God, it’s Friday again. How did that happen? It’s been one of those weeks like… I’m grasping for an appropriate metaphor. Okay, I’m not a big Star Trek fan, but if you imagine the Enterprise having some warp engine issues, moving slowly, then lurching forward in big jumps, as if Scotty is just learning how to drive a manual transmission… that’s my week. (Btw, in my imagined Enterprise, Bones is played by Karl Urban, because duh! Karl Urban.) Let me give you a few highlights. The week started with several days of constant rain and near-constant thunder. Monday Read more…

Feline, Thy Name Is Loki (Or It Should Be)

Okay, I’m gonna be straight with you guys, my blog peeps, because that’s the way I roll. (Is that an 80s or 90s flashback?) Originally, I’d thought sharing the Club Revelations short story here would be a good way to make sure I actually finished it. I also thought it would be a good way to cover my weekly blog post while I’m distracted by other stuff (stuff I will share in the coming weeks). Great strategy, until I decided to post the story on its own page rather than in lieu of a blog post, effectively doubling what I Read more…

More Club Revelations, and Why Everyone Should Play the Uke

The Sydney short story saga continues! This week’s chunk of Club Revelations, the Sydney Brennan short story I’ve been posting in rough form, can be read here. Remember, you can read it from the beginning or skip ahead to Part 3 if you’ve been keeping up. At this rate, it will probably run to about eight parts, but no guarantees—I might get crazy one week and just post it all. If you read last week’s blog post, you’ll know my husband and I were looking forward to seeing Jake Shimabukuro perform (and you may still have The Bohemian Rhapsody stuck Read more…
